New medical director named for Dana-Farber Blum Family Resource Center Van program
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute has named Jacques Carter, MD, MPH, as the medical director of the Gillette Company Community Prostate Cancer Screening and Education Program operated out of the Dana-Farber Blum Family Resource Center Van.
Carter serves as an attending physician at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and as an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. In his new role with the health van, Carter will oversee the comprehensive prostate screening program, including digital rectal examinations and blood testing for prostate specific antigen (PSA). He will also be available to answer questions related to prostate disease.
"A message that I'd like to bring to men in the community is that they must be knowledgeable about prostate disease and prostate cancer," said Carter. "All men are at risk, and early detection makes a big difference."
"Dr. Carter has been on the front lines as a clinician, educator and public figure as a primary care physician. He understands the threats and controversies that prostate cancer carries," said Philip Kantoff, MD, chief of the Division of Solid Tumor Oncology and director of the Lank Center for Genitourinary Oncology at Dana-Farber. "We are delighted to have him on board at Dana-Farber, leading the community prostate cancer education and screening program."
Carter earned his medical degree at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and completed his residency training in internal medicine at New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston. This was followed by graduate work at Harvard School of Public Health and a clinical fellowship in primary care medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
Dana-Farber's Blum Family Resource Center Van is designed to bring Dana-Farber expertise in the struggle against cancer to the public, through early detection prostate cancer screenings, and several cancer education/awareness and prevention initiatives.
