Stuart Weitzman Fashion Show to raise funds for ovarian cancer research at Dana-Farber

Food, fashion, and funding to fight ovarian cancer

Ovations for the Cure is presenting Boston's first annual Stuart Weitzman Fashion Show on Friday, April 7, at the Westin in Waltham, Mass., to raise funds for ovarian cancer research at Dana-Farber and awareness of the symptoms of this often-fatal disease.

The luncheon will feature Stuart Weitzman's spring line, plus an appearance by CBS4 Arts and Entertainment anchor Joyce Kulhawik, who is an ovarian cancer survivor. The event will also include a raffle and auction. All proceeds will benefit the Madeline Franchi Ovarian Cancer Research Fund at Dana-Farber.

Created in 2004 by Patricia Franchi-Flaherty, a seven-year survivor of ovarian cancer, to honor her mother, the fund sponsors ovarian cancer research initiatives at Dana-Farber. Called "the other women's cancer," ovarian cancer, with more than 22,000 new cases in 2005 alone, is often diagnosed too late for treatment to be effective due to the easily overlooked symptoms of the disease.

"One of our goals is to help women learn more about this disease so that they can be aware of its quiet symptoms," says Franchi-Flaherty. "We also want women to understand how important it is to know their family's medical history and to alert their doctor so they can be closely monitored if there's a risk factor. Equally important," she adds, "we are raising funds for research that will develop early detection techniques and more targeted therapies for this silent disease."

Shoe lovers will enjoy every aspect of the show featuring Weitzman's exclusive line with its sumptuous pumps, glittering mules, and jeweled sandals, all made with his legendary attention to detail.

The luncheon begins at noon, with doors opening at 11 a.m. for a champagne reception, at the Westin, Waltham, Mass. Tickets are $200 each or $2,000 for a table of 10. Call (508) 650-4900 to purchase tickets.
