Staff achievements spur accolades

Staff throughout the Institute have garnered honors for excellence in patient care, research, and teaching in recent months. Among them were DFCI President Emeritus David G. Nathan, MD, chosen to receive the 2003 John Howland Medal — the highest tribute given by the American Pediatric Society. The medal, to be bestowed this May, honors individuals who have helped advance the field.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, meanwhile, named James DeCaprio, MD, of Medical Oncology a Stohlman Scholar, further bolstering his research into mechanisms by which cells become cancerous.

DFCI Director of Patient-Family Education Susan DeCristofaro, RN, MS, OCN, was elected chair of the National Cancer Institute's Cancer Patient Education Network, a group fostering communication among patient educators around the country.

Alan D'Andrea, MD, of Pediatric Oncology garnered the Fanconi Anemia Research Fund's Award of Merit for his 25 years of work on this rare childhood disease, which has uncovered genetic links with breast and ovarian cancers. In recognition of his studies on the genetic signals behind cancer, Ronald DePinho, MD, of Medical Oncology is this year's winner of the G.H.A. Clowes Memorial Award from the American Association for Cancer Research. The honor, to be presented in April, recognizes outstanding accomplishments in basic research.
