Living well with advanced disease
Another area the researchers are investigating is the quality of life of women with metastatic breast cancer in the first two years after they've been diagnosed.
"There are plenty of patients who are doing very well in the first couple of years while being treated," says Dr. Lin. "We want to focus on this early part of the condition: What are the women's concerns or anxieties – do they improve or worsen over time – and what can we do as clinicians to help them through this period?"
The patients' ups and downs will be documented by surveys administered when they enter the study and every six months thereafter.
"This will be an important part of the cohort study," Dr. Lin explains. "The women will help us learn what is most important to their quality of life and help us determine how to focus our interventions to make the biggest difference."
She adds, "We hope to create a valuable resource for biological and psychosocial research, one that will allow us to accelerate the pace of progress for women with metastatic disease."
