Mary Cooley, PhD, RN, joined the Cantor Center staff as a nurse scientist in December of 2002. She completed her doctoral studies at the University of Pennsylvania, focusing on symptom management and quality of life in people receiving treatment for lung cancer.

Cooley is currently involved in a multi-center study on cancer symptom management and is mentoring four staff nurses as they pursue research interests. For example, Cooley is helping nurses in radiation oncology learn how young adults adjust to life after treatment for Hodgkin's disease.

In 2003, Cooley was the recipient of two prestigious national awards. The New Investigator Award from the Oncology Nursing Society recognized her contributions to building a scientific base for oncology nursing practice. And a Career Development Award from the National Cancer Institute will help support Cooley's emerging interest in smoking cessation, especially as it relates to patients diagnosed with cancer of the head, neck, or lungs.
