John and Tina Hammock
An open approach to living with cancer
Following are some excerpts from the e-mails that connected Tina with her family and friends during her illness.
"It seems sort of strange to be sending out a group e-mail about this, but the subject is hard for me to write about and I really want all of you to know, so I thought this might be the best option right now. As some of you know, my mom was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor on Friday."
Love,
Amy
"She is doing really well, driving the car and walking the dog, still shaken emotionally but extraordinarily strong and healthy. The family wants everyone to know how much they appreciate the way you have respected their wishes."
- Joan and Pam
"The growth of the tumor this quickly after radiation shows that it did not really work. As the doctor said today, 'This is nasty tumor.'"
- John
"Thank you all for the many ways you have supported us through this long, difficult time. One of the most appreciated ways, hard as it was, was to do nothing—not call, not send food, not send flowers. We have felt your love and positive thoughts, believe me."
- Tina
"Tina's operation was very successful. The tests done last night show that her faculties remain strong. Please, no visitors at the hospital today. She really is way too weak still."
- John
"Ana has best summed up the mood at the Hammocks today. She plainly said, and I quote, 'This sucks.' The MRI shows that the tumor has grown."
- John
"Everyone tries to say something consoling, everyone is helpless and sorry. I think, in the end, all that matters is love."
- Julia
"It is with great sadness that I write to tell you my mom passed away this morning after being in coma for almost a week. I just want to thank you for all of your wonderful support. I feel truly blessed."
Love,
Amy
