Stem Cell Transplantation
Established in the late 1970's, the Dana-Farber/Children's Hospital Cancer Care (DF/CHCC) Pediatric Stem Cell Transplantation Program is one of the oldest and largest pediatric transplant centers in the nation. Through this program, pediatric transplantation experts from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Children's Hospital Boston perform approximately 80 stem cell transplants each year.
Children receiving stem cell transplants are admitted to the 13-bed stem cell transplantation unit at Children's. New patient consultative services and post-transplant care appointments take place at Dana-Farber's Jimmy Fund Clinic.
Through internally initiated studies and affiliations with research organizations including the Children's Oncology Group and the Blood and Marrow Clinical Trials Network, the program remains at the forefront of transplantation research and technology. Treatment advances from studies overseen at Dana-Farber and Children's have led to international recognition of the program as one of the most accomplished pediatric transplant centers in the world.
DF/CHCC also offers several programs for survivors of stem cell transplantation. Dana-Farber's David B. Perini, Jr. Quality of Life Clinic helps survivors of childhood cancer address the long-term effects of their therapy. The Clinic includes special programs to ease patients' transition to post-transplant life, such as the School Liaison Program. In addition, Dana-Farber offers a multidisciplinary clinic staffed by nutritionists, endocrinologists, physical therapists, dermatologists, psychologists and social workers for childhood cancer survivors of all ages, as well as a special follow-up clinic for stem cell transplant patients.
